The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."

He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
