Learners Fight Back Over AI-Taught Higher Education Class: "We Students Could Have Just Used ChatGPT"
Several students at a British university shared significant frustration when realizing their digital course was largely taught through artificial intelligence.
New Path Ambitions Shattered
One student and another participant were among over forty enrollees who started a programming program hoping to move into tech careers through a state-backed apprenticeship scheme.
However their hopes were quickly lowered when they encountered computer-created slides being presented by an synthetic voice.
When we submitted projects that was AI-generated, we would be kicked out from the institution,â stated James during a recorded exchange with his instructor.
Multiple Objections and Institutional Response
Learners frequently raised concerns about the computer-generated resources, but the college seems to have continued using computer-created resources.
Curiously, the college has strict rules restricting student use of AI, saying that submitting automated work equals policy breach.
Growing Phenomenon in Colleges
The case reflects a wider movement across educational institutions more and more employing AI tools for education, course material generation, and individual assessment.
- Current surveys suggest nearly a fourth of UK teachers now use AI in their teaching practices
- Government documents have praised generative AI's capacity to change education
- But many participants find the reality discouraging rather than revolutionary
Revealing Evidence of AI Generation
Students noticed various indicators suggesting computer-created content:
- Varying language patterns between American and UK English
- Suspicious file labels
- Surface-level information with sometimes mentions to inappropriate US legislation
- Audio abruptly switching to a foreign accent before returning
Participant Frustration and Career Worries
One student voiced deep anxiety about his career future, saying he felt âstuck with this courseâ after investing two years.
Another participant, experiencing a career change, commented he had opted for the course for meaningful knowledge rather than merely a certification.
âSitting there with resources that is just unworthy of anybody's time,â he said, âwhile you could be using that time genuinely interacting with something worthwhile, is genuinely disappointing.â
Despite university claims about upholding learning outcomes, learners felt the concluding introduction of real instructors was inadequate and belatedâ to resolve their core concerns.
