Intense Winds Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents encouraged to avoid going out as powerful gusts strike the nation.

Intense gales attaining speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in nearly 90,000 properties without power and forced authorities to cancel over 100 air travel services, as reported by regional news sources.

The winds are influencing the whole South Island and lower areas of the northern region, according to the weather forecasting body.

Officials in New Zealand have released uncommon high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in key areas encompassing these major districts.

Locals have been advised to stay indoors, stay off roads, and get ready for further power and communication outages.

Broad Damage and Crisis Response

This outage seems to be impacting residences mostly in the southern region, while officials report that power was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have reported that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, while utility poles and vegetation have been brought down by the winds.

Across Wellington, a person was killed after being hit by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Additionally in the city, a woman was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was captured in a widely shared car camera footage.

Flights in and out of the city have been suspended as a result of the gusts, while some roads and libraries are not operating.

At the same time Canterbury officials have issued a crisis declaration, to support recovery activities.

Strike Action Amid Extreme Conditions

The wild winds on today occur while many of teachers, doctors and other public workers are engaged in what has been termed a "significant labor action", demanding higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

Yet the intense climate has compelled them to alter some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies relocated inside or called off.

Similar gusts are also sweeping Australia, ushering in a high-temperature event to the country's outback.

Agencies have issued burning restrictions for concern about wildfires.
