A defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been told to refrain from talking about secret matters in any cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss secret information while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister said that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that safety is a issue in all modern cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
The broader security situation highlights the significance of strong measures and vigilance in all aspects of official activities, from transport use to communication habits.
