Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a White House Bid in 2028

The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he plans to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 elections wrap up.

"Yes, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," the governor commented when asked about giving serious thought to a presidential run following the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

The governor's current term as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he cautioned that any decision is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent

He has stepped forward as a prominent opponent of the former president's team, using his digital presence and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost Democratic congressional seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has invited attacks from critics.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend interview on a major news network. Duffy disclosed plans to withhold government money from California and suggested revoking the authority to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from California," Duffy declared, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an undocumented commercial driver that caused three deaths and injured individuals.

Newsom's office highlighted that the national authorities had renewed the driver's employment on several occasions, which allowed him to obtain a CDL under federal law.

Duffy had previously announced he was withholding $40m from California for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand national statutes," the governor's team responded in a last month's comment countering the funding warnings. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's truck drivers had a fatal crash rate much lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted poll showed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that Newsom must consider running for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has grown to an mean of a third from previous levels, while his unfavorability has dropped from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.

Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while visiting several swing states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The notion that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, amazing," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who emerges in 2028 and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
