The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
