The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
