Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his plan to support Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations
Only weeks ago, Adams had publicly condemned the former governor, labeling him a âdeceptive figure and a untruthful personâ and alleging of having âa career of pushing Black candidates out of races.â Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams changed his position, revealing he now plans to support the former governor in communities where he holds significant backing.
âI think that it is imperative to energize the Black and brown communities that have experienced urban displacement on how important this race is,â Adams remarked.
Adams continued, âResidents have seen their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.â
Election Landscape and Recent Events
The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has drawn interest globally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.
In a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa declared they would reject Adamsâs endorsement if extended.
Months ago, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.
During a separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, âAndrew and I will appear together later today.â
The announcement came a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated candidate debate.
