Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed anger after former President Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and penalized "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Content That Triggered the Dispute
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in armed forces or security positions.
"As we did, you all made an vow to protect and defend this constitution," the representatives affirmed in the short video. "At present, the dangers to our governing document are not only from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can reject illegal orders, you should decline improper directives. No one has to follow commands that break the law or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Furious Reply
The clip reportedly trigger a angry reaction from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he wrote: "This is really concerning, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Respond
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a combined announcement condemning the remarks.
"Violent politics has no role in America," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all served our United States with exceptional national pride and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these extreme digital publications and recant his violent language before he causes harm," the declaration stated.
Officials' Strong Reaction
The officials who participated in the video also released a declaration.
"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who love this nation and made an pledge to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president considers it liable to punishment by execution for us to reiterate the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should recognize that we have their protection as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and duty to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "All citizens must come together and denounce the president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Additional Partisan Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's remarks and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of public representatives."
He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this right away and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This constitutes very harmful, you have leading members of the government telling troops to ignore directives, I think that is historic in US history."
The GOP official also allegedly informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to analyze the language and establish all that."
Administration Statement
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a reporter, "Would the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the official said. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who worked together to organize a video message to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members urging them to defy the executive's legal commands."
She said: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can cause fatalities, it can result in chaos, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are basically encouraging."
