British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
