Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
