2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Boost Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Management Transition Comes After Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified employees about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a clearer direction.
The president stated that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to better meet community desires.
Trend of Key Acquisitions
The news echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Here is the entire content from the president's announcement:
Team—
I know you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to persist.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game testing phase was enlightening. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the requirement for a clearer vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to consideration and overhauled the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its potential to our fans.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. Following a period of talks, he officially joins us on the specified date.
His guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter space is vast, having dedicated the last 15 years creating and overseeing some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving Ben next week. We are all eager to persist witnessing the development of the game in the time to come.
David
Experience of the New Head
The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in last year together with a public demo. Then, the developers described the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch reads. "Face the opponents with fresh skills, stakes, and obstacles that evolve every round. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is up to you."
Project Ethos lacks an official debut schedule or platforms, but players can anticipate more updates as creation progresses.
